Former Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird has reunited with the Indiana Pacers as a consultant. Bird remains close to the NBA even after his retirement in 1992 and found himself in various roles within the organization.
Bird’s role in the Celtics’ front office
Soon after retiring as a player, Bird took on a front-office role with the Celtics until 1997. He served as a special assistant for the team during this time, offering his expertise and knowledge gained from his years as a legendary player.
Bird’s coaching career with the Indiana Pacers
After his five-year executive stint with the Celtics, Bird took over as the head coach of his hometown team, the Indiana Pacers. Despite having no prior coaching experience, Bird committed to coaching the team for three years, leading them to a successful run under his tenure. In his first season as head coach in 1997-98, the Pacers had a 58-24 record and made it to the conference finals, where they were defeated by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Bird was recognized as the Coach of the Year for his efforts in transforming the Pacers.
