The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters is set to take place from April 9-16, featuring the season’s third Masters 1000 tournament and the first to be played on red clay. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic returns to action at the event, making him a favorite to claim another title. Meanwhile, several other top players are expected to compete, but some big names will be missing due to various reasons.
Gael Monfils
Gael Monfils, a former finalist at the Monte-Carlo Masters, won’t be participating in the tournament this year. He returned to action last month at the Indian Wells Masters after a lengthy injury hiatus but sustained another injury at the Miami Open, forcing him to withdraw. Monfils initially seemed optimistic about competing in Monte-Carlo but has now decided to sit out the event.
Denis Shapovalov
Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov won’t be participating in the Monte-Carlo Masters this year. Though he hasn’t provided a specific reason for his absence and doesn’t appear to be injured, it could be a scheduling choice. Shapovalov has competed in the event just two times in his career, failing to make it past the first round during both appearances. This marks the third consecutive year he has missed the tournament.
Felix Auger-Aliassime
World No. 7 Felix Auger-Aliassime has withdrawn from the Monte-Carlo Masters to recover from a knee injury. He mentioned that the discomfort had been present for some time and decided to take time off to address the issue. The young Canadian hasn’t performed well in Monte Carlo in his career, winning just one match at the venue in 2019. He now plans to start his clay season at the Madrid Open.
