Aneke Rune thrilled as son Holger reaches Monte-Carlo Masters third round, defeating Dominic Thiem

Aneke Rune, mother of the young Danish tennis player Holger Rune, was ecstatic when her son advanced to the third round of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Seeded sixth in the tournament, Holger Rune faced a challenging match against Dominic Thiem in the second round.

First match on clay in 2023

Although Thiem fought hard in the second set, Rune emerged victorious with a 6-2 opening set win and holding his serve at 5-4. Aneke took to social media to express her happiness at her son’s performance, sharing a video of him winning match point on her Instagram stories. After the match, Rune stated that he was happy with how he managed his first match on clay, playing aggressively and moving well.

Head-to-head against Matteo Berrettini

Next, the young Dane faces Italian player Matteo Berrettini in the third round of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Berrettini overcame Francisco Cerundolo in a hard-fought match after being a set down. The two players have met twice before, with a head-to-head record of 1-1. Their most recent encounter at the Acapulco Open saw Rune leading 6-0, 1-0 before he had to retire due to an injury.

Possible quarterfinal positioning

The winner of the match between Rune and Berrettini will go on to face either third seed Daniil Medvedev or 13th seed Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. If Rune manages to defeat Berrettini, it will be the first time in his career that he reaches the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event on clay.
