Carlos Alcaraz’s Barcelona Hat-trick Dream Dashed: Spaniard Pulls Out of Second Consecutive Tournament

Carlos Alcaraz will not be able to defend his title at the Barcelona Open as he has withdrawn from the tournament. The Spaniard, who won the last two ATP 500 events, will miss the chance for a third consecutive title. This is his second straight withdrawal from a competition, having previously opted out of the Monte-Carlo Masters due to a right forearm injury.

Alcaraz’s withdrawal was confirmed by the tournament’s official page. The Barcelona Open’s post wished him a quick recovery and hoped to see him return next year. Alcaraz was last seen competing at the Miami Open, where he reached the quarterfinals with victories over Roberto Carballes Baena, Gael Monfils, and Lorenzo Musetti before losing to eventual runner-up Grigor Dimitrov.

The Spaniard is next set to participate in the Madrid Open, where he is also a two-time defending champion. He has won 15 out of 19 matches in the 2024 season, including the BNP Paribas Open title in Indian Wells. Alcaraz has also reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and the Australian Open.

Carlos Alcaraz has had an impressive run at the Barcelona Open, with 10 wins out of 11 matches. The Spaniard debuted at the ATP 500 event in 2021, receiving a bye to the main draw and suffering a defeat to Frances Tiafoe. In the 2022 Barcelona Open, Alcaraz, seeded fifth, achieved wins over Kwon Soon-woo, Jaume Munar, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alex de Minaur before defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the final. In 2023, Alcaraz, then the top seed, had a successful title defense at the Barcelona Open, dominating the tournament without dropping a single set and winning against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
