Tennis pro Christopher Eubanks recently revealed that he changed his backhand from a double-handed to a single-handed technique due to his admiration for legendary player Roger Federer. Eubanks had a strong showing at the 2023 Miami Open, making it to the quarterfinals. Although he ultimately lost to Daniil Medvedev, his performance at the Masters 1000 tournament will move him into the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career.
Switching to a Single-handed Backhand
During a post-match press conference, 26-year-old Eubanks discussed his choice to adopt a one-handed backhand—a rarity among American tennis players. Eubanks shared that he originally had a two-handed backhand but decided to switch to a single-handed one when he was about 14 years old. He credits this change to his love for Federer and even joked with his father about the decision to switch styles.
Moving into the ATP Top 100
Entering the top 100 ATP rankings, Eubanks was asked about where he could make improvements moving forward. He stated that he needed to continue doing what he had been doing since qualifying for the 2022 US Open and emphasized focusing on every aspect of his game. Eubanks believes that improving in all areas will be the key to his future success.
Continued Progression
Eubanks expressed his dedication to bettering his game as a whole by saying, “There is not really anything I can pinpoint to say, oh, this is what has to improve. I think every area of my game can improve. I can always improve my serve, can improve my movement, my volleys.” After his impressive run in Miami, the tennis player now has a 5-6 win-loss record for the season.
