Coach shares failed contract extension talks after leading Emma Raducanu to 2021 US Open victory

Emma Raducanu’s former coach, Andrew Richardson, opened up about his split from the 20-year-old, stating he had a plan for the youngster and wanted to continue with their association when he was informed that he was out of contract. Richardson coached Raducanu from ages 11 to 13 and again on a nine-week trial after Wimbledon in 2021. He led her to her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open, where the British youngster became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam. However, two weeks after the victory, Raducanu announced her split from Richardson.

Reasons for Split

Raducanu stated she needed someone “more experienced” since winning the Slam. Richardson revealed that he was keen to renegotiate after the US Open triumph, saying, “I wanted to carry on, and I had a plan that I wanted to put in place for Emma.” However, he was informed by her agent that they were going to go in a different direction.

Reflection on the Relationship

Dismissing rumors about him coaching his son, Richardson asserted he learned a lot from his experience with Raducanu and is very busy now. “Life has moved on,” he said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to work with the young tennis star and reflecting on the valuable lessons gained during their time together.

Emma Raducanu’s Injuries and Ranking

Since her 2021 US Open triumph, Raducanu has faced a series of injuries, failing to win a single title since her maiden Slam victory. The former World No. 10 was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Madrid Open and will miss both Roland Garros and Wimbledon due to surgeries on both wrists and her left ankle. As a result, Raducanu has dropped to World No. 103 in the latest WTA rankings. However, she has been keeping fans updated on her recovery process through social media while spending time with friends and family.
