Daniil Medvedev Injury Update: Tennis Star “Scared” in Madrid Open Quarterfinals Before Retirement

In the Madrid Open quarterfinal match against Jiri Lehecka, Daniil Medvedev was forced to retire due to a right upper leg issue. The Russian had been leading 3-2 in the first set but soon needed medical assistance for his injury. Despite returning to the game, Medvedev required further treatment as his mobility was hindered, particularly to his right. Lehecka took advantage of his opponent’s injury and secured the first set 6-4. Fearing further damage, Medvedev decided to retire, giving Lehecka his first chance at an ATP Masters 1000 semifinal.

A video captured Medvedev expressing his fear to the physio, saying, “I am so scared.” Later in a press conference, the ATP World No. 4 explained that after speaking with the physio, he couldn’t focus on the match. The 2021 US Open champion said he tried to continue playing, but experienced pain during sprints, ultimately leading to his difficult decision to withdraw from the tournament.

This marks the second time this season that Medvedev faces injury concerns. He previously sustained a right foot injury and dealt with exhaustion during the Australian Open, forcing him to withdraw from the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam and the Qatar Open.
