Denis Shapovalov expressed joy following his fiancée, Swedish tennis player Mirjam Bjorklund, as she announced her return to professional tennis after an eight-month absence. Shapovalov and Bjorklund started dating in 2019 and got engaged in July 2023. Bjorklund, who is also a professional tennis player and is ranked 280th in the world, suffered injuries during the 2023 US Open in August, sidelining her for eight months. Recently, she took to Instagram to announce her return, revealing her recovery from a foot injury and neck surgery.
Last week, Bjorklund participated in an ITF tournament in Portugal but lost in the first round. She is now competing in the WTA 125 Lleida Challenger in Spain and won her opening-round qualifying match against Andorra’s Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva on April 30. Shapovalov was thrilled to see his fiancée back in action and left an encouraging message on her Instagram post.
Shapovalov, ranked World No. 132, has also endured injury struggles himself, sustaining a knee injury during a fourth-round loss against Romain Safiullin at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. He returned to the ATP Tour at the ASB Classic in Auckland in January 2024 after six months of recovery, but experienced a rocky comeback with early losses in Auckland and the Australian Open. However, he found his footing in late March, securing significant wins at the Miami Open. Most recently, he competed at the Madrid Open, where he won against Facundo Diaz Acosta and Tomas Martin Etcheverry before losing to Alexander Zverev in the third round. Shapovalov also partnered with Alexander Bublik in doubles at the Madrid Open, with the duo set to face Jamie Murray and Michael Venus.
