Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina recently commented on Wimbledon’s decision to lift the ban on Russians and Belarusians, recognizing the move but asserting that it’s time to “kick some a**” on the tennis court. After a year-long break due to a back injury, the trauma of the war, and becoming a mother, Svitolina returned to the court at the 2022 Miami Open. Despite her loss to Yulia Putintseva at the Credit One Charleston Open, she remains dedicated to supporting her homeland, organizing a ‘Tennis Plays for Peace Pro-Am’ event and fundraising for Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts.
Wimbledon Reverses Ban on Russian and Belarusian Players
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) banned Russian and Belarusian players from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, prompting the ATP and WTA to cancel the tournament’s ranking points and imposing a £1.4 million fine on the club. However, the AELTC recently announced the reversal of this decision, allowing players like Daniil Medvedev, Aryna Sabalenka, Andrey Rublev, and Victoria Azarenka to participate in the tournament in July.
Svitolina Returns to Tennis After Extended Break
Svitolina took an extended break from tennis, with her last match before her recent return being at the 2022 Miami Open. During her time off, she focused on recovering from a back injury and dealing with the trauma of the war between Russia and Ukraine. In October, Svitolina and her husband Gael Monfils welcomed their daughter, Skai, into the world. The 28-year-old athlete has since received a wildcard entry into the main draw of the Credit One Charleston Open.
Support for Ukraine and Call for Olympic Ban
While Svitolina is now focused on competing, she remains committed to supporting her homeland through the ongoing conflict. After organizing the ‘Tennis Plays for Peace Pro-Am’ event in support of Ukraine, Svitolina recalled her recent trip to the war-torn country as a “heartbreaking moment” and remains dedicated to raising funds for rebuilding efforts. Earlier this year, she also called for the banning of Russian and Belarusian athletes from the 2024 Paris Olympics, emphasizing that the Olympics should be a platform for inclusion and diversity, and that consequences must be faced for the actions of the athletes’ governments.
