Eugenie Bouchard, a former World No. 5 and currently ranked 292 on the WTA Tour, has expressed confidence in her tennis abilities despite facing many setbacks due to injuries. Bouchard spent 17 months on the sidelines nursing a shoulder injury that required surgery before making a comeback at a WTA 125 tournament in Vancouver last August. Since then, the 29-year-old has participated in only three tournaments this year.
Confidence in abilities and motivation
In a recent pre-tournament press conference, Bouchard stated that she still believes she can fight for titles and win again in her career. She explained that if she didn’t have this belief, she would pursue a different path in life, such as having kids. The 2014 Wimbledon Championship runner-up briefly entertained thoughts of retirement but ultimately chose not to let injuries be the reason for ending her professional career. Bouchard said she missed the competition and felt motivated while on the sidelines.
ITF Oeiras Ladies Open
Currently, Bouchard is in Portugal for the ITF Oeiras Ladies Open, where she was granted a main draw wild card. So far this year, she advanced to the Round of 32 at the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas after exiting the ASB Classic and the Australian Open in the qualifiers.
Hinting at representing Canada at Billie Jean King Cup 2023 finals
Bouchard also recently hinted at participating in the Billie Jean King Cup 2023 finals in November. Canada secured a spot in the finals with a thrilling 3-2 win against Belgium at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on April 15. Congratulating Team Canada, Bouchard hinted at the possibility of joining the team for the finals through an Instagram post, writing “Congrats girlies!!!! Thanks for doing all the hard work, see ya in the finals.”
