Grigor Dimitrov is set to face Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the highly anticipated Miami Open 2024 final on Sunday, March 31. Dimitrov defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4 in the semifinals, hitting 18 aces and winning two break points. The match lasted for two hours and 39 minutes, with Dimitrov securing 99 of the 188 points played.
Meanwhile, Sinner comfortably beat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in his semifinal match. He managed to create nine break-point opportunities on Medvedev’s serve and converted four to secure his place in the final. Sinner has had an impressive year so far, winning his first Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open in January, followed by a win at the Rotterdam Open, and reaching the semifinals at the Indian Wells Masters. The Italian’s recent victory over Medvedev was his 21st win in 22 matches this season, and he currently holds a 2-1 head-to-head lead over Dimitrov.
Dimitrov praised Sinner’s performance during a recent interview with Tennis Channel, stating, “Clearly, he’s the best player right now in my opinion. He’s been playing outstanding tennis and how he’s been able to keep that actually throughout every single week, it’s a pleasure for me to watch. Now, I’ve to compete against him, which is an even better occasion for me.” Dimitrov also expressed confidence in his own abilities, adding, “I like these matches; I want to test myself, and it’s a final. It’s one of those matches that I need to focus on my side of the net. Clearly, he’s shown he’s capable, so am I.”
At the Miami Open, Dimitrov has already defeated two top-5 players, including Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, and will break into the ATP top 10 regardless of the final’s outcome. However, Dimitrov promises to give it his all in the match against Sinner, saying, “It can easily be a very interesting match. I don’t want to overthink or think what’s going to happen, but all I know is I’m going to get out there and give everything I have.” In addition to Alcaraz and Zverev, Dimitrov has beaten Alejandro Tabilo, Yannick Hanfmann, and world No. 9 Hubert Hurkacz at Miami Gardens.
