Grigor Dimitrov couldn’t help but laugh when he heard Carlos Alcaraz’s comments after their Miami Open quarterfinal match. Alcaraz admitted to feeling like a 13-year-old against Dimitrov and claimed that he and his team couldn’t find any weaknesses in the Bulgarian’s game.
“I have a lot of frustrations right now, because he made me feel like I’m 13 years old (smiling). You know, it was crazy. I was talking to my team saying that I don’t know what I have to do. I don’t know his weakness. I don’t know anything,” Alcaraz said.
When Dimitrov listened to Alcaraz’s words during his own press conference, he laughed heartily and responded with a huge smile, saying, “That’s a great comment.”
In the match, Dimitrov’s aggressive approach and unpredictable style prevented Alcaraz from settling, as the Bulgarian claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Dimitrov is now set to face Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semifinals. If he manages to defeat Zverev, he’ll reach the final and return to the top 10 rankings.
Dimitrov’s last top 10 ranking was in 2018, but he dropped out in 2019 due to a shoulder injury and poor form. His highest ranking was World No. 3, which he achieved in late 2017.
Alexander Zverev holds a 7-1 head-to-head record against Grigor Dimitrov, with the Bulgarian’s only win coming in their first meeting in 2014 at the Swiss Indoors Basel. They have faced each other in four ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, with Zverev winning each time. Their most recent matchup was at the 2023 Chengdu Open, where Zverev won 6-3, 7-6(2). Zverev reached this year’s Miami Open semifinals by defeating Fabian Maroszan in the quarterfinals.
