Denmark’s tennis sensation Holger Rune recently expressed his admiration for tennis legend Roger Federer and called him the “most elegant” player he has ever seen. This admiration came up in an interview with Gio Journal following Rune’s elimination from the Miami Open in the fourth round by American Taylor Fritz.
Rune On Playing with Roger Federer
In the interview, Holger Rune was asked which retired tennis player he would have loved to play with. He named Roger Federer as one of them, saying that he had practiced with him during the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals but never got the chance to play a match against him. Rune also mentioned that playing against Federer would be inspiring for him, highlighting the Swiss player’s elegance on the court.
Rune’s Tennis Dream
When asked about his tennis dream, the 19-year-old player mentioned that it remained the same since he was six years old: to become the best player in the world, win multiple Grand Slam titles, and win medals in the Olympics. He stated, “I dream big. Since I was 6 years old, I wanted to become the best player in the world and win multiple grand slams and the Olympics. This dream hasn’t changed.”
Ideas for Changing Tennis Rules
Rune also shared his thoughts on potential changes to tennis rules in order to keep the sport engaging for younger audiences and maintain its appeal on television. Some of his ideas included shorter matches, cutting one serve, doing no add on 40-all points, counting net serves as serves, and introducing shorter breaks between points. He also suggested a possible way to make spectators feel closer to the players, citing his experience watching the first edition of the Next-Gen tournament where the audience felt more engaged with the players during the matches.
