Holger Rune’s Coach Admits Paying the Price after Fun Practice Drills Obliteration by Dane

Holger Rune’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, recently provided a humorous glimpse into their entertaining on-court training sessions, emphasizing the Danish player’s competitive spirit. Mouratoglou initially teamed up with Rune towards the end of the 2022 season, and under his guidance, Rune won three of his four titles, including the 2022 Paris Masters.

Though they separated after Rune’s first-round defeat at the 2023 US Open, the 20-year-old rehired Mouratoglou before his 2024 Acapulco campaign in February, following an unsuccessful partnership with Boris Becker and Severin Luthi, who previously coached Roger Federer. In a video, Mouratoglou was seen doing push-ups after losing to Rune during practice, joking about the consequences of facing such a strong competitor.

Holger Rune’s start to the 2024 season has been somewhat shaky. He began with a runner-up finish in Brisbane, followed by a second-round upset at the Australian Open and a semifinal appearance in Montpellier before a second-round exit in Rotterdam. Accompanied by Mouratoglou, Rune advanced to the semifinals in Acapulco and made his Indian Wells debut with a quarterfinal finish.

However, the World No. 7 faltered at the Miami Open, where he was eliminated in the second round by eventual quarterfinalist Fabian Marozsan. Reflecting on the loss, Rune acknowledged that he should have withdrawn due to not feeling fully fit. Rune will now commence his clay court campaign at the Monte-Carlo Masters (April 6-14), where he will attempt to defend his runner-up title from last year.
