Italian Open 2023 Prize Money: Earnings of Champion Elena Rybakina & Runner-up Anhelina Kalinina

The women’s singles event of the 2023 Italian Open concluded on Saturday with Elena Rybakina emerging as the winner against Anhelina Kalinina in the final. Despite a torrential downpour causing a delay, Rybakina charged ahead from the beginning, securing the victory after Kalinina retired due to injury in the second set.

Rybakina benefits from opponents’ injuries

This marks the third time that Rybakina has benefitted from a mid-match retirement in Rome. Both Anna Kalinskaya and Iga Swiatek were forced to abandon their matches against the 23-year-old Kazakh in the third round and quarterfinals due to injuries. This latest win has given Rybakina her second title of this season, following the BNP Paribas Open, and she is set to reach a career high of World No. 4 in the WTA rankings.

Italian Open prize money discrepancies

Rybakina claimed €521,754 in prize money from her victory at the Italian Open, while runner-up Kalinina received €272,200 for her efforts. In comparison, the men’s finalists earned €1,105,265 and €580,000 for the winner and runner-up positions, respectively. Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter secured the women’s doubles title and were awarded €182,170 for their straight-sets victory over Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who earned €96,430 for making it to the final.

Rybakina tops WTA tour in prize money this season

Elena Rybakina’s impressive results throughout the season have catapulted her to the top of the prize money leaderboard. In addition to her previous winnings, she received $662,360 and $1,977,437 for her runner-up finishes at the Miami Open and Australian Open. Coupled with her Italian Open earnings and other tour-level results, she has amassed over $4.5 million this year, surpassing her annual earnings from past seasons. If she maintains her form, Rybakina has the potential to earn at least $10 million by the end of the season, coming close to Serena Williams’ record of over $12 million in a single season.
