Jessica Pegula Withdraws from Madrid Open 2024 Due to Injury: Not Ready to Play

Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the Madrid Open 2024 women’s singles event due to an injury. Pegula has experienced several ups and downs during the 2024 season. She began the year by leading Team USA at the United Cup but failed to take the team to the knockouts.

Pegula then suffered a second-round exit at the Australian Open with a loss to France’s Clara Burel, followed by a neck injury that forced her to sit out the entire Middle Eastern hardcourt swing. She eventually returned to the court and had an impressive run to the semifinals at the San Diego Open, only to lose her opener at Indian Wells. Pegula later played until the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and the semifinals of the Charleston Open. She also helped her national team secure a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Final with a 4-0 win over Belgium.

However, Pegula decided against participating in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2024 due to scheduling issues and has now announced her withdrawal from the Madrid Open 2024. As a result, she risks losing her World No. 5 ranking to Maria Sakkari as she will not be defending her quarterfinal points at the Madrid Open. Pegula is set to lose 215 ranking points, which could lead to Sakkari displacing her if she claims the WTA 1000 trophy this year.
