Former tennis player Jimmy Connors shared his thoughts on the WTA Finals moving to Saudi Arabia. The WTA recently confirmed that Saudi Arabia would be hosting three editions of the prestigious year-end tournament in 2024, 2025, and 2026. There were both supporters and detractors of this decision, as the country has faced scrutiny over its human rights and women’s rights records.
Connors expressed his opinion on the Advantage Connors podcast, noting that Saudi Arabia’s recent involvement in golf and tennis indicates the nation’s desire to change its global reputation. The 71-year-old said he isn’t in a position to judge and pointed out that players who participate aim to make a living and earn more money. If Saudi Arabia is willing to invest in the sport, many issues become irrelevant due to the influx of money.
The prize money at the WTA Finals will reach $15.25 million this year, a substantial increase from $9 million in 2023. The tournament faced criticism last year after players complained about conditions in Cancun. Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina were among those who criticized the facilities. Connors also lambasted the WTA at the time, calling the situation “unacceptable.”
The eight-time Grand Slam champion emphasized that the year-end tournament is critical and that the WTA needs to ensure it is perfect. Despite the challenges, last year’s WTA Finals concluded with a positive outcome as Iga Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula to win the championship. The 2024 WTA Finals will take place from November 2 to November 9.
