Madrid Open 2024: Top Seeds Rohan Bopanna & Matthew Ebden Eliminated in First Round

In the ATP Mutua Madrid Open, the top-seeded Indo-Australian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden faced a first-round exit after losing to American Sebastian Korda and Australian Jordan Thompson. The two pairs were competing against each other for the first time, and the match lasted one hour and 17 minutes, ending with a score of 7-6 (4), 7-5 in favor of Korda and Thompson.

Bopanna and Ebden had an outstanding performance in the Indian Wells Masters 2023 and reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the finals of the US Open in the same season. Bopanna also became the oldest player to reach the world number one ranking in doubles in 2024, but his rank was overtaken by his doubles partner Ebden in the latest ATP Rankings released in April.

Before their defeat in the Monte-Carlo Masters 2024 and the Madrid Open, the pair won the Miami Open title in March by defeating Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and America’s Austin Krajicek 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-6 in the final.
