Nick Kyrgios has commended Roger Federer for his unparalleled playing style, which is universally admired for its sheer elegance. Federer’s comprehensive approach to the game, coupled with his aggressive play and diverse range of shots, has earned him 103 titles, including 20 Grand Slam titles. His skills truly shined when executing his signature one-handed backhand, daring drop shots, and demonstrating his net-game abilities.
Recently, Myles David, the creator of the Tuned Into Tennis podcast, shared a video featuring Federer during a rally in a match. In the clip, Federer alternates between forehands and backhands before advancing to the net and concluding the point with a powerful overhead smash. David captioned the post, “I know tennis isn’t just about aesthetics but if it ever was, Roger Federer would get 10s every time.” Kyrgios noticed the post and responded, “Smoothest to ever do it.”
Federer and Kyrgios have met seven times on the ATP Tour, with Federer emerging victorious in six encounters. Kyrgios’ single win occurred during their initial match-up in the Round of 32 at the 2015 Mutua Madrid Open.
Although Kyrgios has been praised by fans, peers, coaches, and former pros for his undeniable talent, his dedication to tennis has been questioned and is often cited as a reason he has not yet secured a Grand Slam title. Kyrgios, however, has accepted who he is and recently dismissed comparisons with Federer on the Good Trouble with Nick Kyrgios podcast. He commented, “If everyone was the same and acted the same, no one would watch. They wouldn’t be growing fans, youthful fans, like… I’m not relatable to Federer. Only a couple of people are relatable to Federer, I’m not. I never looked at him and I was like, ‘I wanna be that guy,’ I knew it wasn’t attainable,” Kyrgios said.
