Novak Djokovic: Becoming World No. 1 at Nearly 37 Surpasses His Dreams

Introducing the topic:

Novak Djokovic recently revealed that he never imagined he would be the world’s number one tennis player at 37 years old. Djokovic currently holds the record with 24 Grand Slam titles and is the oldest man to be ranked number one in the ATP rankings, surpassing the record previously held by Roger Federer. Djokovic, who will turn 37 next month, has also spent the most weeks atop the rankings.

In a post-match interview at the Monte-Carlo Masters following his first-round victory, Djokovic told Sky Sports that he is grateful for the opportunity to continue competing at the highest level at nearly 37 years of age. Djokovic believes hard work, dedication, and staying fit have allowed him to maintain his longevity in the sport.

During the interview, Djokovic also mentioned his encounter with India’s Rohan Bopanna, who is currently the oldest number one ranked doubles player. Djokovic jokingly said that Bopanna contributes more to the combined age of 80 for the top-ranked singles and doubles players on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic faces stiff competition for the number one ranking, with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz closely behind him. Djokovic regained the top spot after winning the US Open in September, followed by the ATP Tour Finals. However, this season has been off to a slow start for the Serbian, as he lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open against eventual champion Sinner. The upcoming clay court season will be crucial in determining the top player in men’s tennis, with only about 1000 points separating Djokovic, Sinner, and Alcaraz at the moment.
