Bosnian tennis player Damir Dzumhur recently shared a photo of his son with Serbian legend Novak Djokovic at the Srpska Open. Dzumhur revealed that his young son did not know who Djokovic was when they took the picture, but he is confident that his son will eventually understand the World No. 1’s legendary status.
Novak Djokovic’s appearance at the Srpska Open
After a disappointing start at the Monte Carlo Masters, Djokovic participated in the inaugural Srpska Open in Banja Luka. The Serbian player received a first-round bye and began his campaign against France’s Luca Van Assche in the round of 16 on April 19.
Damir Dzumhur’s performance and their previous encounters
Home-favorite Dzumhur had previously exited from the qualifiers at the Estoril Open earlier this month. At the Srpska Open, he faced Liam Broady in the first round. Djokovic and Dzumhur have met three times on the tour, with the Serb winning all three encounters. Their first meeting was in 2018 at the Paris Masters, followed by the 2019 Qatar Open, and the 2020 U.S. Open.
Novak Djokovic on his experience in Srpska
Djokovic expressed his excitement about participating in the ATP 250 tournament in Srpska, considering Banja Luka as one of the best places for Serbian players due to the love and support they receive from the people there. In a press conference, Djokovic said, “I think it’s one of the best places for us Serbian tennis players and athletes in general to be able to perform where we have so much love and support from local people.” He appreciates the warm welcome he received and the positive energy he felt from fans in Banja Luka, allowing him to move forward after his Monte Carlo disappointment. The Srpska Open marks Djokovic’s first tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the ATP Tour.
