Rafael Nadal will face Alex de Minaur in the second round of the 2024 Madrid Open on Saturday, following their encounter last week at the Barcelona Open where De Minaur defeated the Spaniard in straight sets. However, Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya believes the Australian should prepare for a different Rafael Nadal this time, as the former World No. 1 has become fitter and gained more match practice.
In the first round, Nadal defeated American up-and-comer Darwin Blanch with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in just 65 minutes. Moya is confident that Nadal will put up a more competitive fight against De Minaur compared to their previous match in Barcelona.
Moya also discussed Nadal’s journey towards the end of his tennis career, as 2024 is expected to be his final year on the ATP Tour. Moya recalled the support from fans and their sense of connection to Nadal, even though many have never met him personally. Nadal is currently experiencing a rush of adrenaline, knowing that his time on the tennis court is nearing its end, and Moya expressed his best wishes for his protégé in the coming days.
