American tennis player Taylor Townsend is petitioning to be allowed to consume carbs ahead of the 2023 Italian Open, as she makes her women’s double Top-10 debut. This week, Townsend will be marking her maiden appearance at the WTA 1000 Italian Open. The 27-year-old is participating in WTA 1000s outside the United States for the first time this season. In addition, Townsend has reached a career-high doubles ranking of World No. 6, following her latest Madrid Open women’s doubles semifinal finish alongside Leylah Fernandez.
High Spirits in Italy
In a conversation with Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj, Townsend discussed her expectations for the Italian Open and her excitement for the tournament. She declared that she will be in high spirits throughout the event, jokingly boasting about her energy with a reference to Jamie Foxx glasses and “popping the collar.” Townsend has been following a strict diet while on tour, but she plans to put together a petition to persuade her coach to ease the restrictions while in Rome.
Taylor Townsend’s and Successful Career Turnaround
After giving birth to her first child in March 2021, Townsend returned to tennis in April 2022. Having not competed in a tournament for over a year, she had fallen out of the ranking charts. However, her career has experienced a turnaround as she now enters the World’s Top-10 in women’s doubles for the first time. With impressive results, she has accumulated an outstanding record, including finals at the 2022 US Open and 2023 Miami Open, semifinals at the 2022 French Open and the 2023 Madrid Open, and titles at the 2023 Adelaide International 1 and 2. Grateful for her progress, Townsend considers the journey and resulting success a “blessing.”
Townsend’s Participation in the Italian Open
Townsend will compete in the women’s doubles at the Italian Open, partnering with Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. In addition to her doubles performance, the World No. 168 singles player has successfully qualified for the singles main draw and will face Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure in the opening round. Townsend looks forward to showcasing her skills and maintaining her success in both singles and doubles during the Italian Open.
