At the 2024 Tiriac Open on Monday in Bucharest, Luca Nardi experienced a painful fall, injuring his ankle during the opening match against Thiago Seyboth Wild. Nardi lost the first set 6-3 to the Brazilian but managed to level the score by winning the second set 7-6(5). In the deciding set, Nardi was leading 4-2 after an early break.
However, at 5-3, Nardi missed five match points, and Seyboth Wild saved them all. During the game, Nardi slipped on the clay, fell, and clutched his ankle in pain. While the chair umpire rushed over to aid Nardi and call the medical team, Seyboth Wild immediately fetched a chair from the player area for Nardi to rest his injured foot on. The sportsmanlike gesture was appreciated by the crowd at the ATP 250 event, who gave Seyboth Wild a rousing cheer.
Although Nardi returned to play, his injury limited his movement, and Seyboth Wild eventually won the match 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(2) in just over three hours. Seyboth Wild will likely face Mariano Navone in the second round of the 2024 Tiriac Open. The fifth seed, Navonne, will be up against Luciano Darderi in his opener. Seyboth Wild may meet top seed Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals and third seed Sebastian Korda in the semifinals. From the bottom half of the draw, second seed Tallon Griekspoor and fourth seed Alejandro Tabilo are favored to reach the final. The Tiriac Open is back on the ATP calendar for the first time since 2016, with past champions including David Ferrer, Thomas Muster, Gilles Simon, Grigor Dimitrov, and Goran Ivanisevic, who won the inaugural 1993 edition.
