Ex-world champion critiques Vince McMahon’s ineffective management of WWE commentators

Over the years, Vince McMahon has reportedly had disagreements with some of his performers, and one such star is Mick Foley. After retiring from wrestling, Foley transitioned to a commentary role for Friday Night Smackdown in 2008 but found it challenging to work with McMahon.

Foley’s experience as a commentator

Mick Foley began working as a commentator for Friday Night Smackdown in 2008 after having not wrestled a singles match for well over a year. Despite his popularity among fans, Foley only worked behind the commentary desk from April to August of that year. On his podcast, Foley is Pod, the former WWE Champion explained that McMahon micromanaging the commentators did not allow him to excel in his new role.

Foley’s recent WWE return

Foley returned to WWE programming in 2023 when he attended the Hall of Fame ceremony to induct his long-time friend Stacy Keibler. This marked his first appearance on the show since his unsuccessful stint as a commentator.

Vince McMahon’s reasons for returning to WWE

In 2023, Vince McMahon returned to WWE’s board to facilitate the sale of the company to Endeavor. Before the sale, current WWE CEO Nick Khan sought assurance from McMahon that he was returning for the right reasons, which McMahon confirmed. The merger of WWE with the UFC’s parent company, Endeavor, was announced on April 3, 2023.
